Bolton Wanderers 1-1 Wolverhampton Wanderers

This contest between two clubs struggling at the foot of the Premiership table ended in a one all draw this afternoon. The Irish senior duo of Stephen Hunt and Stephen Ward started for Wolverhampton Wanderers, while Kevin Doyle and Kevin Foley were introduced as secondhalf substitutes. Matthew Doherty was also on the substitute bench.

Chelsea 1-3 Aston Villa

Aston Villa travelled to London without hamstring injury victim Shay Given but centre back Richard Dunne was in his regular starting position while Ciaran Clark, who has filled a midfield role in the last two league matches, retained his midfield starting position, where he was joined by the enigma that is Stephen Ireland. The visitors stunned their hosts by recovering from the concession of a penalty goal following a foul by Dunne, to score three times, the first from Stephen Ireland, to record a notable victory.

Manchester United
2-3 Blackburn Rovers (12.45pm)

Any illusions that midfielder Darron Gibson, a surprise inclusion in last week's comfortable home victory over Wigan Athletic, may have had concerning the retention of his position for this early afternoon encounter against another club struggling at the foot of the Premiership table and indeed his future at the club, may have quickly evapourated following his exclusion from the matchday squad this afternoon.

Norwich City 1-1 Fulham

The hosts had Ireland hopefuls Wesley Hoolihan and Anthony Pilkington in their starting eleven for the visit of Fulham, but Marc Tierney had not recovered from the groin injury which forced his late withdrawal from the midweek encounter with Tottenham Hotspur. Damian Duff, conspicuous by his absence from the Fulham matchday squad last weekend, was a late introduction from the substitute bench while Stephen Kelly retained his starting position in this one all draw.

Stoke City 2-2 Wigan Athletic

Both Jonathan Walters and Marc Wilson were in the Stoke City starting eleven for this afternoon's visit of Wigan Athletic, but Glenn Whelan was again missing with a calf injury. James McCarthy started and continued his fine recent form in midfield for the visitors in this battling two all draw.

Monday 26 December 2011

Bolton Wanderers 0-2 Newcastle United

There is much current speculation concerning Ireland Under 21 player Mark Connolly, who has not been able to make the breakthrough at Bolton Wanderers but appears to be attracting the interest of a number of Championship clubs. Visitors Newcastle United have substituted Leon Best around the hour mark in their last two league engagements and that was again his fate in this away victory this afternoon.

Chelsea 1-1 Fulham (1.00pm)

Both Damian Duff and Stephen Kelly have been consigned to the substitute bench at the start of their most recent league encounters, with only Kelly, introduced for the final fifteen minutes of last week's resounding defeat, gaining any game time. Kelly started and completed the full ninety minutes in this excellent away performance but Duff was missing fromthe matchday squad.

Manchester United
5-0 Wigan Athletic

Midfielder Darron Gibson, who appeared to be very much out of favour at Manchester United with a move in the January 2012 transfer window his logical option, was a surprise inclusion in this comfortable home victory. The performance of James McCarthy for visitors Wigan Athletic, coupled with his last two performances against Chelsea and Liverpool, may offer seminal notice of a' changing of the guard' as he must surely be in pole position to supersede Gibson with Ireland.

Stoke City 0-0 Aston Villa (7.45pm)

Both Jonathan Walters and Marc Wilson retained their starting positions in the Stoke City side while Glenn Whelan was again missing with a calf injury. Aston Villa continue to be without without hamstring injury victim Shay Given but Richard Dunne was again joined by Ciaran Clark, who filled a midfield role.

Sunderland 1-1 Everton

Buoyed by their midweek victory at QPR, Martin O'Neill's Sunderland will be seeking improvement in their home form. Both Keiren Westwood and John O'Shea retained their starting positions, while James McClean was introduced from the substotute bench with ten minutes remaining of this one all draw. The thigh strain which forced Seamus Coleman out of his regular midfield starting position for Everton resurrected itself on his return last week against Swansea City, forcing him to leave the fray at Goodison Park after thirty minutes. He was absent this afternoon and there must be some doubt about his fitness to return during the busy New Year programme.

West Bromwich Albion 0-0 Manchester City

West Bromwich Albion, dual victors in their last two away encounters, faced a huge challenge to extend that form in this home contest against leaders Manchester City but will almost certainly be delighted with a point from a scorerless draw. Shane Long continues to earn the plaudits for his performances up front for the 'Baggies' while Simon Cox, who has been an unused substitute for some time, is rumoured to be seeking alternative pastures in the January 2012 transfer window.

Shane Long again led the attack for the 'Baggies', while Simon Cox, an unused substitute on Saturday, suffered the same fate.

Queens Park Rangers 2-3 Sunderland

Sunderland manager Martin O'Neill, while disappointed by defeat at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday last, expressed satisfaction with the efforts of his players and received similiar commitment when his side returned to London to defeat Queens Park Rangers tonight. Ireland duo, John O'Shea and goalkeeper Keiren Westwood both retained their places in the starting eleven while James McClean was an unused substitute.

Wigan Athletic 0-0 Liverpool

Playing a holding midfield role, James McCarthy was named 'Man of the Match' for Wigan Athletic, who came from behind to secure a valuable point against high flying visitors Chelsea on Saturday last. An equally daunting task faced McCarthy and his team, which also included Conor Sammon, this evening, when Liverpool made the short trip to the DW Stadium. Manchester United 1-1 Newcastle United

Midfielder Darron Gibson, who was included in the Ireland squad for the play-off against Estonia but did not make the substitute bench in either encounter, was on the substitute bench for his club Manchester United this afternoon and may require a permanent or loan transfer in the Jauray 2012 'window' if he is to stake a claim for the EURO 2012 Finals squad. Similiarly, Newcastle United striker Leon Best, currently injured, will have to make a very significant club statement if he hopes to board that EURO plane.

Norwich City 2-1 Queens Park Rangers

None of the Norwich City trio of Wesley Hoolihan, Anthony Pilkington or Marc Tierney are expected to receive a late call for the EURO 2012 squad but, while Hoolihan may not fit the Trapattoni mould, the younger two could be considered candidates for the World Cup 2014 campaign.

Stoke City 3-1 Blackburn Rovers (12.45pm)

Stoke City striker Jonathan Walters continues to impress for his club while his midfield colleague Glenn Whelan, a mainstay of the Ireland side, was back in the starting eleven for this early kick-off today and found the net in their victory. The versatile Marc Wilson, also started today and while not really expected to hear the Trapattoni EURO trumpet, his versatility may just keep him on the thought fringes.

Sunderland 1-2 Wigan Athletic

Fitness permitting, both John O'Shea and Keiren Westwood will be in the Ireland squad for next year's European Championship finals and both were in the starting eleven for their club Sunderland this afternoon. Midfielder David Meyler still awaits a return to his club starting lineup following his serious injury but is one who is very likely to have to wait for the Brazil 2014 qualifiers in order to stake an international claim. Fellow midfielder James McCarthy appears to be regaining his form with Wigan Athletic but sadly finds his club in deep trouble at the foot of the Premiership, although their added time victory this afternoon will have gone some way to brightening their weekend.

West Bromwich Albion 1-3 Tottenham Hotspur

Shane Long, who returned from injury to score the winner last Saturday, continues to garner the plaudits at West Bromwich Albion, but suffered a midweek training setback, and while he did start today, was substituted midway through the second half. His club and international colleague Simon Cox was introduced from the substitute bench after just twenty minutes, but was also unable to make much impact in this defeat.

Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 Aston Villa

Goalkeeper Shay Given together with defender Richard Dunne, the foundations upon which the Ireland defence is built, both started for Aston Villa when they were defeated at White Hart Lane on Monday night. Young defender Ciaran Clark is unlikely to enter the Trapattoni Euro 2012 squad equation, unless injury besets a number of his front line regulars. but he must persevere, with his first target being regular selection for his Club side, which has been sporadic so far this season.

Everton 2-1 Wolverhampton Wanderers

Midfielder cum full back Seamus Coleman whose club form has been much improved of late, is a possible casualty when Giovanni Trapattoni selects his final twenty three man EURO 2012 squad. The Donegal man failed to make the substitute bench for either leg of the play-offs against Estonia. The Wolverhampton Wanderers trio of Stephen Ward, Stephen Hunt, who scored a penalty today, and Kevin Doyle are all expected to make the EURO squad, but colleague Kevin Foley, sidelined through injury for several weeks may be another disappointed victim of circumstance.

Stoke City 2-3 Queens Park Rangers

His Tallinn performance has probably secured a EURO squad place for Stoke City striker Jonathan Walters, who scored for his club today, while his midfield club colleague Glenn Whelan, a late substitute this afternoon, will undoubtedly be in the squad. The versatile Marc Wilson, an unused substitute today, may now have fallen by the wayside although that versatility may keep him on the standby list.

Sunderland 0-0 Fulham

The recently more aggressive John O'Shea will be in the Ireland squad as will his club colleague goalkeeper Keiren Westwood and both of them played their part this afternoon. Young tyro David Meyler, whom we hope continues his progress following his serious injury is another who may have to await the Brazil 2014 qualifiers in order to stake a claim. Both Damian Duff and Stephen Kelly, whose injury kept him out of the squad today, will be in the Ireland squad and 'Duffer' in particular will be aiming to stay clear of injury throughout the remainder of the season.

West Bromwich Albion 2-1 Bolton Wanderers

Giovanni Trapattoni has already name-checked the recently injured Shane Long, who returned to score the winner this afternoon, as a EURO squad member while his West Bromwich Albion colleague Simon Cox, an added time substitute today, is also likely to be favoured.

Wigan Athletic 3-3 Blackburn Rovers

James McCarthy, who completed ninety minutes for Wigan today, was on the substitute bench for the second leg of the play-off against Estonia, but is another who may be a borderline case when the final squad is selected for Poland/Ukraine next summer.

Bolton Wanderers 5-0 Stoke City (3.00pm)

Irish international eyes were focussed on Stoke City duo, Jonathan Walters and Glenn Whelan, who are both in the play-off squad announced by Giovanni Trapattoni last week as their side were trounced this afternoon. The versatile Marc Wilson, who may have been in line for a late call up, missed the midweek Europa League tie through injury and remained sideloned today.

Fulham 1-3 Tottenham Hotspur (4.00pm)

Damian Duff, who had been on the Fulham substitute bench without seeing any action in recent League encounters, returned to the starting lineup today but was substituted on seventy minutes, while Stephen Kelly was introduced as a half-time substitute in this afternoon's home defeat.

Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-1 Wigan Athletic (1.30pm)

The hosts, with Stephen Ward, who scored, Stephen Hunt and Kevin Doyle all in their starting eleven scored a confortable win over struggling Wigan Athletic, for whom James McCarthy, was an unused substitute.

Arsenal 3-0 West Bromwich Albion

West Bromwich Albion travel to London to face Arsenal without injury victim Shane Long, while Simon Cox, who disappointingly, had not been selected by his club to replace the stricken Tipperary man in recent matches, did make the starting eleven in their three nil defeat.

Aston Villa 3-2 Norwich City

Hosts Aston Villa had Shay Given and Richard Dunne in their starting eleven while back-up defender Ciaran Clark was on the substitute bench for the visit of Norwich City for whom Wesley Hoolihan, Anthony Pilkington and Marc Tierney were starters and all came under observation by Ireland Assistant Manager Marco Tardelli last week.

Manchester United 1-0 Sunderland

Visitors Sunderland were without the injured John O'Shea and the defender is also expected to be an international withdrawal. Goalkeeper Keiren Westwood was summoned from the substitute bench last week and retained his position in this defeat at Old Trafford. Midfielder David Meyler was introduced by Sunderland for the final fifteen minutes while James McClean was joined on the substitute bench for the first time by nineteen year old centre back John Egan.

Newcastle United 2-1 Everton (12.45pm)

Newcastle United striker Leon Best has been summoned to join the international squad which assembles in Dublin on Monday and will be aiming to maintain his current club form in the early kick-off on Saturday afternoon. Midfielder Seamus Coleman, who may be deployed as a squad full-back by Giovanni Trapattoni next week, started in midfield for Everton but was switched to right back in the final stages.

Everton 0-1 Manchester United (12 noon)

This North West encounter at ' High Noon' featured Seamus Coleman who is beginning to recover his form and played the full ninety minutes for the hosts against a Manchester United side who recovered from their implosion at Old Trafford last weekend to secure three points in a one nil victory.

Manchester City 3-1 Wolverhampton Wanderers

Having been thrashed five two at home in the Carling Cup by this opposition on Wednesday evening, it is unlikely that Wolverhampton Wanderers were looking forward to this trip to the home of the current Premiership leaders. The quartet of Stephen Ward, Stephen Hunt, Kevin Doyle and teenage defender Matt Doherty played in mid-week and manager Mick McCarthy retained the senior trio for this encounter. In another routine home victory, Hunt scored for the visitors from the penalty spot.

Norwich City 3-3 Blackburn Rovers

While none of the Irish players involved in this encounter were selected by Giovanni Trapattoni yesterday, nevertheless much supporter interest surrounds the consistent performances of the home trio comprising midfielders Wes Hoolihan and Anthony Pilkington together with left back Marc Tierney all of whom have made significant contributions to the fine start to Premiership life made by 'The Canaries', who again showed their mettle by recovering from a two goal deficit to earn a late point.

Sunderland 2-2 Aston Villa

Sunderland, who have featured a recently more aggressive John O'Shea in their defence saw the Waterford man depart through injury after thirty five minutes this afternoon. Midfielder David Meyler returned to first team action with a ten minute substitute cameo at the end of the match while goalkeeper Keiren Westwood was summoned from the substitute bench after fifty two minutes following injury to colleague Mignolet. Fellow goalkeeper Shay Given together with defender Richard Dunne started for Aston Villa with Dunne getting on the scoresheet in this two all draw. Ciaran Clark has recently returned to the matchday squad but remained an unused substitute.

West Bromwich Albion 0-2 Liverpool (5.30pm)

Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni may be disappointed that Simon Cox did not replace the injured Shane Long in the West Bromwich Albion side for this late afternoon kick-off, but he was introduced from the substitute bench with some twenty minutes remaining in their two nil defeat at the Hawthorns.

Wigan Athletic 0-2 Fulham

James McCarthy was again excluded from the Wigan Athletic match day squad as visitors Fulham collected the points with a two nil success. Both Damian Duff and Stephen Kelly were on the substitute bench for Fulham but, save for a very few seconds in added time for Duff, were surplus to requirements.

Arsenal 3-1 Stoke City (1.30pm)

Irish international eyes were focussed on the three 'W's in the Stoke City side. Jonathan Walters and Glenn Whelan are expected to be in the play-off squad to be announced by Giovanni Trapattoni next week, while the versatile Marc Wilson may yet get a call to the initial extended squad if the manager decides to grant probation. The trio suffered disappointment in London this afternoon but appear to have survived the encounter without any serious mishap.

Fulham 1-3 Everton (1.30pm)

Damian Duff was on the Fulham substitute bench together with Stephen Kelly with neither seeing any action this afternoon. For visitors Everton, Seamus Coleman has had a fragmented season to date having been substituted in his last three matches. He started this afternoon's encounter on the substitute bench and was introduced with some fifteen minutes remaining as his side emerged victorious at Craven Cottage this afternoon.

Aston Villa 1-2 West Bromwich Albion

This Midlands encounter proved disappointing for goalkeeper Shay Given and fellow Aston Villa defender Richard Dunne as their visitors West Bromwich Albion collected all three points. Of concern for Ireland was the nineteenth minute departure of Shane Long through injury while Simon Cox remained an unused substitute..

Bolton Wanderers 0-2 Sunderland

Visitors Sunderland featured John O'Shea in their defence as two late goals secured three points at Bolton Wanderers. Ambitious midfielder David Meyler was again on the bench and is edging his way to a first team return following serious injury. Disappointingly, goalkeeper Keiren Westwood has been unable to break into the starting eleven and was again an unused substitute.

Liverpool 1-1 Norwich City (5.30pm)

While in reality, none of the Irish players involved in this encounter will be selected by Giovanni Trapattoni next week, nevertheless much supporter interest surrounds the consistent performances of the visiting trio comprising midfielders Wes Hoolihan and Anthony Pilkington together with left back Marc Tierney all of whom made significant contributions to earning this point at Anfield.

Newcastle United 1-0 Wigan Athletic

There has been much recent unhelpful comment and debate surrounding the international merits of Newcastle United striker Leon Best, who was today substituted at half-time. Midfielder James McCarthy, who had been a mainstay in the Wigan Athletic side, was excluded from the matchday squad.

Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-2 Swansea City (12.45pm)

The hosts, with a string of Irish candidates in their squad, have been going through a torrid time in the Premiership and, from an Irish perspective, it is hoped that manager Mick McCarthy finds a swift solution to their troubles and we see Stephen Ward, Stephen Hunt, Kevin Doyle, the currently injured Kevin Foley and teenage defender Matt Doherty enjoying more fruitful experiences. This afternoon, with just eight minutes remaining of this early kick-off and his side two goals down, the spectre of the sack must have been staring Mick McCarthy in the face, however, first Kevin Doyle found the net and two minutes later he turned provider to set up the equaliser for Jamie O'Hara and provide welcome relief around Molineaux. Doyle and Ward completed ninety minutes while Hunt and Doherty were unused substitutes.
