International Awards Ceremony a success |

The 16th annual Eircom International Soccer awards were presented at a ceremony held in the Citywest Hotel, Saggart on Sunday 26 February 2006.
The nominations for Senior International Player of the Year were Kenny Cunningham, Richard Dunne and Shay Given with the award going to the Newcastle United goalkeeper. The 29 year old Donegal man, made his senior international debut against Russia in March 1996 and has now accumulated 75 caps. Given was outstanding throughout the qualifying matches for the 2006 World Cup and was a deserved and popular winner of the trophy. The International Personality award went to the esteemed Italian referee, Pierluigi Collina while former Bohemians, Manchester United and Newcastle United midfielder Mick Martin was inducted into the International Hall of Fame. Martin, son of the legendary Con Martin, still works in a technical support capacity with Newcastle United. The emerging Sunderland striker, Stephen Elliott was the recipient of the Young Player award. The Under 21 an Under 19 awards went to Kevin Doyle and Joey O'Brien both of whom made their senior international debuts against Sweden on 1st March 2006.
One of the most popular winners on the evening was Sean McCaffrey, who received the Special Merit award for both his compelling work with the underage international teams since his appointment three years ago and his previous contribution as a Regional Development Officer. In the other underage categories, the emerging talents of seventeen year old Arsenal striker Anthony Stokes, who has recently made exciting progress with Don Givens Under 21 team, and sixteen year old Donal McDermott of Manchester City, were recognised with their respective age group awards.
