Marvellous draw for minnows

The second round of the FAI Carlsberg Senior Challenge Cup is the juncture when all of the Eircom League sides enter the competitions and this afternoon’s draw has thrown up several mouth watering ties involving non-league clubs against Premier Division opposition. Such is the quality of the draw that it is almost impossible to select the pick of the bunch.

The first round replays involving Blarney United against College Corinthians and Bangor Celtic against Athenry will have added impetus as the victors will have home ties against Derry City and Shelbourne respectively.

There will also be huge excitement in the clubhouses of Malahide United, Carrigaline United and Castlebar Celtic who have all been drawn at home and will entertain St Patricks Athletic, Sligo Rovers and Shamrock Rovers respectively.

The winners of the remaining first round replay between Avondale United and Crumlin United will travel to Donegal to face Finn Harps while Waterford Crystal will make the trip to Dalymount Park to take on Bohemians. Cork side Douglas Hall will travel for a Munster derby against Waterford United and the two remaining non-league sides Wayside Celtic and Killester United meet each other.

The only all Premier Division clash pits Longford Town, winners in 2004, against the current league champions Cork City. The present cup holders Drogheda United will travel south to meet first division high fliers Limerick in defence of the Trophy.
