| Derry City top Eircom Premier Division Following completion of the fourth series of fixtures in the Eircom League Premier Division, Derry City sit proudly on top of the table. They are followed in close proximity by the expected trio of Waterford United, Cork City and Shelbourne with surprise packet Bray Wanderers in fifth position. Solid defence is the basis of the Brandywell team’s success and they have yet to concede a goal in the league. This Saturday, April 16th, Derry visit fierce local rivals Finn Harps who despite their extremely disappointing start to the season can be expected to pull out all the stops in this ‘derby’ clash. The former doyens of Irish football, Shamrock Rovers, have also made a very poor start to their campaign and the news that the High Court in Dublin has, at the request of the club, appointed an Interim Examiner is indeed grave. The demise of Shamrock Rovers would be a tragedy for football in Ireland. This weekend’s other fixtures include another of the regular Dublin ‘derbies’, this one involving Shelbourne and St Patricks Athletic, who have just announced the appointment of former FAI CEO, Bernard O’ Byrne as their new Chief Executive. Another
underperforming club, Bohemians, entertain Cork City at Dalymount Park
on Friday evening in what may be the match of the weekend.
