| Dublin City close the Gap on Sligo Rovers | ![]() |
| A
drizzly wet evening at Richmond Park in Inchicore, greeted the top two
sides in the Eircom First Division who were meeting for the third time
this season. The weather made playing conditions very difficult but the
home side settled better at the outset and took control of the match.
The Sligo rearguard came under sustained early pressure from their hosts and was breached on 14 minutes. A corner on the left was delivered into the danger area where both Dublin City centre backs were unmarked. The simple task of heading the opening goal fell to Aiden Lynch. The home side continued to dominate proceedings and with better finishing might have increased their lead. Eventually on thirty one minutes, Dublin City did score a deserved second when midfielder David McGill chipped a ball over the top of a static Sligo defence for Robbie Collins to run on to and having rounded the goalkeeper, tucked home the ball from a very acute angle. Shortly afterwards Sligo suffered a further blow when stalwart centre back, Liam Burns, suffered an injury and was replaced by player coach Gerry Carr. Sligo manager, Sean Connor also chose to further adjust his defence by the substitution of Stephen O’Donnell with the newly re-signed Ian Rossiter. The changes did seem to stabilise the team and they brought themselves right back into the contest during first half injury time when a left wing corner from Low was flicked on at the near post and Carr dived bravely amongst the flying feet to head home. As had occurred in both previous encounters between these sides the second half provided an almost complete reversal of fortune with the men from the West taking control and putting their hosts under constant pressure. Sligo created several reasonable chances but a combination of solid goalkeeping from James Gallagher and inaccurate finishing prevented them from obtaining the equalised their dominance merited. The match was finally settled in the eightieth minute when McGill broke free some twenty five yards out on the left hand side and his swirling shot while lacking real pace, was allowed to bounce and deceived goalkeeper John O’Hara in the Sligo goal to creep in. The result moves Dublin City to within two points of Sligo Rovers at the top of Eircom Division One and both sides will be under pressure next week when they play two further league matches. In tonight’s
other Division One fixtures, Kilkenny City continued to build on their
recent excellent form, which included victories over both leading teams,
with a 5-0 away trouncing of Dundalk. Galway City, who were defeated
by 2 goals to nil in Monaghan on Tuesday evening, were in action against
bottom side Athlone Town at Terryland Park where they took the points
with a 2-1 victory. |
