Republic of Ireland 'B' 1-0 Wales 'B'

The St Kevin's Boys Complex at Shanowen Road, Santry played host to the final series of matches involving the two sides of the Republic of Ireland and Wales on Sunday 27 May 2007. The players, officials and a healthy attendance were greeted with sunny conditions although a stiff wind blew down the ground. The pitch was in pristine condition and a magnificent compliment to Ken Donoghue and his array of helpers at St Kevin's Boys Club.

With both sides having been successful in their opening fixture, this was another keenly contested match. Ireland opened strongly and put the Welsh defence under early pressure. Wales sought to counter, but for the most part they were forced to play second fiddle to a vibrant Irish side, captained by Shane Murray. Ireland's centre back pairing of Carty and Doherty stayed solid throughout and the left flank pairing of Wallace and Philpott linked well,

Ireland's pressure brought reward on the stroke of half time with a goal from Paul Whyte who had also scored in the opener against Northern Ireland. A neat backheel from Ryan Connolly enabled Philpott to cross for Rodgers to power a header at goal. The Welsh goalkeeper blocked the header but the alert Whyte followed up to score.

The second half was relatively quiet with the strong wind proving difficult to overcome. Similar to the first game, manager Vincent Butler chose to offer an opportunity to a number of his substitutes during this second period.
