U15 International Celtic Tri-Nation Tournament
In 2005, the respective Governing bodies of football for the Republic of Ireland, Wales and Northern Ireland agreed to compete on an annual basis at Under 15 International level for the Celtic Tri-Nation Trophy. The competition is played on a round robin basis with each Association providing two teams categorised as 'A' and 'B'. The format of the competition enables the respective underage coaches and managers to evaluate and enhance the development of a much wider selection of young players.
The inaugural Tournament was hosted by the Irish Football Association (IFA) and last year, the Football Association of Wales (FAW) entertained their fellow countries. Both the 2005 and 2006 Tournaments were won by the Republic of Ireland, managed by Vincent Butler. The 2007 Tournament took place in Dublin over the week-end of May 25 to May 27, and once again the Republic of Ireland, with Vincent Butler and coach Niall Harrison at the helm, emerged victorious.
The opening pair of fixtures involved the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, who met each other in encounters designated as 'A' and 'B'. It should be noted that, from a Republic of Ireland perspective, the squads for the 'A' and 'B' fixtures are divided on a balanced basis and do not necessarily equate to first and second choice selections. These matches were played on Friday 25 May 2007 in Whitehall at the ground of Home Farm FC. Weather conditions were dry with intermittant sunshine while a gusty wind gradually brought a chill to the environment.
On Saturday 26 May 2007 the visiting sides, Northern Ireland and Wales faced each other in 'A' and 'B' encounters at the AUL Complex and the match results were:- Northern Ireland 'A' 1-1 Wales 'A' and Northern Ireland 'B' 0-1 Wales 'B'
The St Kevin's Boys Complex at Shanowen Road, Santry played host to the final series of matches involving the two sides of the Republic of Ireland and Wales on Sunday 27 May 2007. The players, officials and a healthy attendance were greeted with sunny conditions although a stiff wind blew down the ground. The pitch was in pristine condition and a magnificent compliment to Ken Donoghue and his array of helpers at St Kevin's Boys Club.
