Manager, Paul Franklin made a number of changes to the vanquished team
of the previous Sunday, for this encounter with Blackburn Rovers, at their
ground in Ealing Central. Emmet Mannion returned following his illness
of last week and after a longer absence, David Hestor took his place in
the centre of defence. The match opened in an entertaining fashion with both sides showing an eagerness to get forward and the Irish in particular displaying enterprise and ingenuity to create a series of opportunities for the strike force of Liam Kelly and Adrian Ward. The returning Hestor together with his central defensive partner, Karl McGee were in early command, which permitted full backs Healy and Carey to foray forward. The Irish midfield quartet took control of proceedings and the solidity of Mannion and Tim Nagle allowed wide players Mick Coffey and Donnie Mullen licence to provide a string of crosses for Kelly who twice struck the post and also brought a fine save from the Blackburn goalkeeper. Against this backdrop, it came as something of a surprise when Blackburn took the lead. A moment of indecision in the Irish rearguard allowed a home striker to nip in and give goalkeeper Darren Nolan no chance. The team responded in admirable fashion and a fine ball into the penalty area by Mannion, was met by the forehead of Kelly for the equaliser. Following the half time break, the Irish continued to press and were quickly rewarded, when an opportune long distance effort from Mullen bounced over the head of the goalkeeper to put RISSC in the lead. With their tails now up, the Irish went further ahead when a through ball found Kelly and he calmly fired home. RISSC were now entirely dominant and went close on a number of occasions. The fourth goal arrived courtesy of a well delivered corner from Coffey being headed home by Mannion. The midfielder was delighted with his effort, as he now returns to Preston University and will not be available for some time. The Irish continued to create chances and finally scored a fifth goal when Ward was fouled in the penalty area and took the kick himself to complete the scoring. This victory was a big confidence booster for the team and they now look forward with eager anticipation to their next league fixture against Hull City at the LPR Sports Ground, Sudbury Hill on Sunday the 2nd October 2005. The kick-off time is 2.00pm and the players would welcome the support of Club Members, friends and colleagues. Team:
