| Butler’s Boys win Pembrokeshire Cup | ![]() |
| The
Pembrokeshire Cup is contested on a biannual basis by the U16 sides from
the Republic of Ireland and Wales. Manager, Vincent Butler brought his
charges to Cardiff to face Wales who were the holders of the Trophy and
returned home victorious.
The game was played in warm and sunny conditions at the impressive Leftwich Stadium the home of athletics in Cardiff. The venue is also the target of Sam Hamman for the future location of his Cardiff City FC. The handfull of Irish supporters in attendance were treated most hospitably by our Welsh hosts. The match was settled by a single goal scored in the 20th minute of the first half by Craig Duggan from Cork club, Kilreen Celtic. The goal arose from a calamitous misunderstanding in the Welsh ranks. Awarded a free kick midway inside the Irish half, the ball was touched sideways by the Welsh free taker to the loitering Ian Daly of Home Farm who with no Welsh player close to him released Duggan through the middle. The Cork player’s pace took him clear of the defence and maintaining his poise Duggan scored comfortably. The scoreline does not in any way reflect the comparison between the sides as the Irish team were markedly superior to the hosts in all areas of the pitch with the obvious exception of goalscoring. From the first good opportunity after two minutes to the end of the game Ireland created a catologue of chances but failed to convert any of them. While Butler’s boys were dominant througout, there were one or two instances when the hosts might have scored and produced a wholly unjustified result. Prominent throughout the match for Ireland was the central midfield pairing of James O’Brien from Cherry Orchard and captain, Conor McCormack from Dundalk side Belurgan. They were ably supported by the jinking runs of Shelbourne’s Dean Marshall on the right wing. Team:
